Born Dorothy May in Texas on May 1, 1936, Georgina Spelvin is best known for her portrayal of Miss Justine Jones in the porn classic Devil In Miss Jones. Spelvin has acted in over 100 adult films, hard and soft core; has appeared on the stage in theater roles, and has had other smaller parts in mainstream films. Georgina retired from porn in 1982 at the age of 47, standing 5'4" tall, 36-25-36, and weighing 120 pounds, and currently works as a graphic designer and desktop publisher and lives in a modest home somewhere in the Hollywood Hills with her boyfriend, actor John Welsh. Georgina used many different pseudonyms throughout her early career, such as Ona Turel [au naturel], and Clit Tores. She was using Georgina Spelvin when she did DMJ and, due to the success of that film, she kept it. (George Spelvin, by the way, is the name actors commonly use when they play a part they feel could be embarrassing to them or parts that are too small to take credit for.) In her prime, Georgina could have hardly be said to have been beautiful. What she did have was an ability to act, an asset to which the then-budding porn industry was seldom accustomed, and a naturalness in front of the camera. "I was a professional actress, and I was doing a job that I was good at." Whether fucking man, woman, vegetable, or whatever, Georgina gave it her all. Her first movie was a film called High Priestess. Prior to this film, she played the lead in the original production of the 1966 play, The Pajama Game, and was a dance double for Shirley MacLaine in Sweet Charity. She started in porn films when in financial trouble in 1972, and soon thereafter met director Gerard Damiano. Her first work with
Damiano was as a cook for the crew. She was working on her menu when her friend Harry Reems asked her to stand in for him in reading the female lines of the script (they had yet to cast the lead female part and Harry had the job of reading the lines in auditions for the male lead). She did so well in what Spelvin says was "a most ordinary job of reading the woman's lines," that she was cast as the lead and the script rewritten for a thirty-six year old spinster rather than a 19 year old nymphomaniac. The result was The Devil In Miss Jones. Her friendship with Gerry Damiano was solidified by the success of DMJ, and Damiano ensured that Spelvin had plenty of work in the industry. Her favorite porn film is For Richer, For Poorer (1979), her last with Damiano. Spelvin, in retrospect, finds "most explicit sex scenes either boring or disgusting. Consequently, I do not seek them out... Fortunately, I can choose what movies and television programs I watch, books and articles I read and sites I visit on the internet.
